How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Changing Your Default Printer

The Moving Target Problem

If you work in an office with multiple printers, or if you regularly switch between a home printer and a “Print to PDF” tool, you might notice that Windows 11 constantly changes which printer is selected by default when you press Ctrl+P. This happens because Windows has a feature that actively tracks the last printer you used and automatically promotes it to be your new default. While Microsoft designed this to be helpful, it usually results in users accidentally sending sensitive documents to the wrong floor of the building because the default printer quietly swapped itself in the background.

How to Force a Static Default Printer

You can disable Windows’ printer management system, forcing the operating system to respect your explicitly chosen default printer forever.

1. Click the Start button, type Settings, and press Enter to open the Settings app.

2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices.

3. In the main pane, click on Printers & scanners.

4. Scroll down past the list of your installed printers until you reach the “Printer preferences” section.

5. Locate the toggle switch labelled Let Windows manage my default printer.

6. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

Setting Your Actual Default

Now that Windows is no longer interfering, you need to explicitly tell it which printer you actually want to be the permanent default. Scroll back up the same “Printers & scanners” page and click on the specific printer you want to use most often (for example, your main office laser printer). On the next screen, click the button labelled Set as default. From now on, no matter how many times you temporarily use the PDF printer or a different network printer, your primary printer will always remain the default option.
