The Download Interruption
By default, Google Chrome is usually configured to download files directly into your computer’s “Downloads” folder the moment you click a link, making the process incredibly fast and frictionless. However, if your settings have been changed, Chrome will instead halt the download and force open a “Save As” dialogue box, demanding that you manually select a folder location and confirm the file name before the download even begins. If you are trying to quickly download ten PDF invoices or twenty stock photos, having to click “Save” twenty times in a row is an infuriating waste of time.
How to Disable the Save As Prompt
You can instruct Google Chrome to bypass the dialogue box entirely and automatically send all files straight to your default Downloads folder.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the window.
3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Downloads.
5. Look in the main pane for the toggle switch labelled Ask where to save each file before downloading.
6. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
Changing Your Default Location
Once you turn this setting off, Chrome needs a place to put all those files. Directly above the toggle switch, you will see a setting labelled “Location,” which shows the current default folder path (usually C:\Users\YourName\Downloads on Windows or /Users/YourName/Downloads on Mac). If you prefer all your fast, automatic downloads to go straight to your Desktop or a dedicated “Work Files” folder instead, click the Change button next to the location path and select your preferred destination.
