How to Add Polygons and Stars to PDFs in Preview on macOS

When you are architecting a visual hierarchy within a complex PDF document on a macOS workstation, standard squares and circles are often mathematically insufficient for highlighting critical data. To force the macOS neural engine to inject highly complex, multi-point geometric vectors—specifically, customizable polygons and multi-point stars—directly into the document matrix, you must deploy the advanced Shapes engine within the native Preview application.

Initializing the Vector Matrix

The Preview application contains a non-destructive annotation engine capable of rendering perfect, scalable geometric primitives over any underlying PDF architecture.

  1. Locate your target image or PDF file in Finder and double-click to open it natively in Preview.
  2. Look at the absolute top-right of the window and click the Show Markup Toolbar icon.
  3. A secondary toolbar will violently deploy. Locate the Shapes icon (it visually resembles a square overlapping a circle).
  4. Click the icon to deploy the geometric dropdown matrix.

Executing the Polygon Injection

Within the dropdown matrix, locate the two highly specialized geometric vectors: the Polygon (a hexagon by default) and the Star (a five-point star by default).

  1. Click your required vector. The exact millisecond you click it, the macOS engine spawns a default-sized shape directly in the absolute center of your document.
  2. Click and hold the center of the shape to drag the primary mass to the correct spatial coordinates on the page.

Mutating the Geometric Architecture

These specific vectors contain advanced manipulation nodes that standard shapes lack.

  • Mutating the Polygon: When you select the polygon, locate the green circular node on its perimeter. Clicking and dragging this node algorithmically alters the number of sides. You can physically drag it to mutate the shape from a simple triangle all the way to a complex dodecagon (12 sides) in real-time.
  • Mutating the Star: When you select the star, it possesses multiple manipulation nodes. One node mathematically controls the number of points on the star (from 3 to infinity). Another node controls the inner radius, allowing you to mathematically sharpen or blunt the spikes of the star.

Use the Fill Color and Border Color icons in the Markup toolbar to customize the vector’s visibility, and press Cmd + S to permanently bake the geometric data into the file structure.
