How to Extract Specific Pages and Split PDFs Using Preview on macOS

When you download a massive, 500-page PDF manual or a lengthy financial report, emailing the entire document to a colleague just to show them a single chart on page 42 is highly inefficient and wastes bandwidth. You need to physically rip that single page out of the master document and save it as a standalone PDF file. You do not need expensive third-party PDF editing software to achieve this. The native macOS Preview application contains a deeply integrated extraction engine that allows you to instantly split, rip, and extract specific pages with a simple drag-and-drop gesture.

Extracting a Single Page

To extract data from a PDF, you must first expose the Preview application’s structural sidebar.

1. Double-click the massive master PDF file to open it in Preview.
2. Look at the absolute top-left corner of the window. Click the Sidebar Button and select Thumbnails from the drop-down menu.
3. You will now see a vertical sidebar on the left side of the screen displaying a tiny preview thumbnail of every single page in the document.
4. Scroll down through the sidebar until you locate the exact page you want to extract (e.g., page 42).

Now, you simply use macOS’s native drag-and-drop architecture:

1. Click and hold your mouse button directly on the thumbnail for page 42.
2. Physically drag the thumbnail out of the Preview window and drop it directly onto your Mac’s Desktop.
3. Release your mouse button.

The Preview engine will instantly execute a mathematical extraction. It copies the exact vector data for that single page and generates a brand new, perfectly formatted PDF file on your Desktop. The original master document remains completely untouched and unharmed.

Extracting a Batch of Pages

If you need to extract an entire chapter (e.g., pages 42 through 50) and save them together as a single, standalone 8-page document, the process is identical.

1. In the Preview thumbnail sidebar, click the thumbnail for page 42.
2. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.
3. Click the thumbnail for page 50. All the pages between 42 and 50 will instantly highlight in blue, confirming they are selected.
4. Click and drag the entire block of highlighted thumbnails directly onto your Mac’s Desktop.

macOS will instantly stitch all 8 pages together into a brand new, multi-page PDF file, completely isolated from the master document.
