When you scan a massive pile of physical documents, the paper often goes through the scanning machine upside down or completely sideways. If you send a client a 10-page PDF contract where page 4 is sideways and page 7 is completely inverted, it looks incredibly unprofessional. You do not need to rescan the physical paperwork or purchase expensive third-party PDF management software to fix this. The native macOS Preview application contains a rapid orientation engine that allows you to permanently rotate and flip individual pages in a fraction of a second.
Rotating Individual Pages
To manipulate the physical orientation of a PDF document, you must first expose the structural navigation sidebar.
- Double-click the messy PDF file to open it in Preview.
- Look at the top-left corner of the window. Click the Sidebar Button and select Thumbnails from the drop-down menu.
- In the new left-hand sidebar, click the specific page thumbnail that is currently upside down or sideways. (The thumbnail will highlight in a light grey box).
- Look at the main menu bar at the absolute top of your Mac screen. Click Tools.
- Select Rotate Left or Rotate Right (or use the lightning-fast keyboard shortcuts: Command + L to rotate left, Command + R to rotate right).
Every time you press the shortcut, the specific page will instantly rotate exactly 90 degrees. You can press it multiple times to completely invert an upside-down page.
Rotating Multiple Pages Simultaneously
If the entire 50-page document was scanned completely backward, manually clicking 50 individual thumbnails is highly inefficient.
To rotate an entire batch of pages at once, you must highlight them all simultaneously. Click the first page in the thumbnail sidebar, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard, and click the final page. All the thumbnails will highlight. Now, when you press Command + R, the macOS Quartz engine will instantly rotate every single highlighted page simultaneously in real time.
Flipping Images
While rotation spins the document on a 2D axis, Preview can also physically mirror the pixels of an image file (like a JPEG or PNG) horizontally or vertically. This is critical if you took a photograph using a front-facing camera and the text on a sign appears backward.
- Open the image in Preview.
- Click Tools in the top menu bar.
- Select Flip Horizontal to instantly mirror the image left-to-right, making backward text readable again.
Whether you are rotating a PDF or flipping a JPEG, these visual changes are not permanent until you explicitly overwrite the file on your hard drive. Press Command + S to permanently lock in the new orientation.
