How to Recover Deleted Notes in Google Keep

Google Keep is designed for speed, which means it is incredibly easy to accidentally swipe a critical note and delete it permanently. Unlike Google Docs, which features a robust version history, Google Keep relies on a simplified interface. However, if you accidentally delete a checklist or a massive block of text, you have a strict, highly limited window of time to recover the data before it is permanently purged from Google’s servers.

Understanding the 7-Day Rule

When you delete a note in Google Keep, it does not actually disappear immediately. Instead, Google moves the file into a hidden “Trash” folder. However, unlike Gmail (which holds deleted emails for 30 days) or Google Drive (which can hold files indefinitely depending on your settings), Google Keep employs an aggressive, 7-day auto-purge policy.

If you do not recover the note within exactly seven days of the moment you deleted it, the data is permanently erased. There is absolutely no way to recover a note after this 7-day window closes, even if you contact Google Support.

How to Recover Notes on Desktop

If you are using a web browser on your computer, retrieving a deleted note is a seamless process.

  1. Navigate to keep.google.com.
  2. Look at the navigation menu on the left side of the screen. If the menu is hidden, click the Hamburger Menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner to expand it.
  3. Click the Trash tab (represented by a garbage can icon).
  4. You will see a grid of all notes deleted in the last 7 days. Hover your mouse cursor over the specific note you want to save.
  5. Click the Restore icon (it looks like a small clock with a counter-clockwise arrow).

The note will instantly vanish from the Trash folder and reappear on your primary dashboard exactly as it was, with all colors, checklists, and labels completely intact.

How to Recover Notes on Mobile

The process is nearly identical on the iOS or Android mobile application.

  1. Open the Google Keep app.
  2. Tap the Hamburger Menu in the top-left corner.
  3. Tap the Trash option.
  4. Tap on the specific deleted note you want to recover to open it.
  5. The app will warn you that the note is in the trash. Tap the three vertical dots in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  6. Tap Restore.

Remember, if you ever manually tap “Empty Trash” while inside this folder, you instantly bypass the 7-day countdown and permanently incinerate every file inside it.
