How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Keep to Reduce Eye Strain

When you are checking your grocery list on Google Keep late at night, the default bright white background can cause severe eye strain. Furthermore, if your smartphone uses an OLED screen, rendering large areas of bright white pixels consumes a massive amount of battery power. To protect your eyes and extend your device’s battery life, you should manually enable Dark Mode inside the Google Keep application.

How to Enable Dark Mode on Mobile Devices

By default, the Google Keep app usually mirrors your phone’s system-wide theme. However, you can force the app to remain in Dark Mode permanently, regardless of what the rest of your phone is doing.

  1. Open the Google Keep app on your iOS or Android device.
  2. Look at the top left corner of the screen and tap the Hamburger menu icon (the three horizontal lines).
  3. Scroll down the sidebar and tap Settings.
  4. Under the “Display Options” section, tap on Theme.
  5. A popup window will appear with three options: Light, Dark, and System Default. Select Dark.

The entire interface will instantly invert. The bright white background will change to a deep, OLED-friendly charcoal grey, and your black text will turn a soft, easily readable white. The pastel colors you assigned to your individual notes will also automatically dim to match the new aesthetic.

How to Enable Dark Mode on a Computer Browser

If you use Google Keep on your desktop computer, the web interface does not automatically sync with the theme you chose on your smartphone. You must enable it separately.

  1. Open your computer’s web browser and navigate to keep.google.com.
  2. Look at the top right corner of the dashboard and click the Gear icon (Settings).
  3. In the small drop-down menu that appears, simply click Enable dark theme.

The browser window will instantly switch to the dark aesthetic. If you ever want to revert back to the bright white layout, simply click the Gear icon again and select “Disable dark theme.”
