When you are reading a complex article or a dense legal document on your Mac, encountering an unfamiliar word can derail your focus. Historically, you would have to open a web browser, navigate to a search engine, and manually type the word to find its meaning. macOS eliminates this friction by integrating a powerful, system-wide Dictionary application directly into the core operating system, allowing you to define any word instantly without ever leaving your current window.
How to Access the Dictionary via Spotlight
The fastest way to look up a word when you are not currently reading a document is to use Spotlight Search, which acts as a direct portal to the Dictionary app.
- Press Command + Spacebar on your keyboard to instantly open the Spotlight Search bar in the center of your screen.
- Type the word you want to define (e.g., “ubiquitous”).
- Spotlight will instantly process the word. Look at the top results in the drop-down menu; you will see a section labeled Definition.
- Click on that definition to open a small preview window containing the full dictionary entry, pronunciation guide, and thesaurus synonyms.
How to Define Words Directly in Text
If you are actively reading an article in Safari, an email in the Mail app, or a document in Pages, you can trigger the Dictionary overlay without typing anything at all using macOS’s built-in trackpad gestures.
- Hover your mouse cursor directly over the unfamiliar word in the text.
- Firmly tap (do not click) the trackpad with three fingers simultaneously. (If you are using a Magic Trackpad with Force Touch enabled, you can alternatively press down very hard on the word with one finger until you feel a secondary “click”).
A beautiful, translucent yellow popup window will instantly appear directly above the word. This popup contains the complete dictionary definition. You can swipe left or right within this small popup to view the Thesaurus entry (for synonyms and antonyms) or even the Apple Glossary entry if it is a technical term. Once you have read the definition, simply click anywhere else on your screen, and the popup will vanish, allowing you to seamlessly continue reading your document.
Managing the Dictionary Application
The actual Dictionary application lives in your Mac’s Applications folder. If you open the full app manually, you can customize which reference books it uses.
Click on Dictionary in the top menu bar and select Settings (or Preferences). Here, you can check or uncheck various language dictionaries (e.g., French, Spanish, Japanese) and specialized reference books (like the Oxford Dictionary of English or Wikipedia). Whichever sources you check in this menu will immediately become available globally whenever you use the three-finger tap gesture across macOS.
