If you find yourself constantly minimizing Safari to look at an email, dragging windows around your screen to find a hidden document, and generally feeling overwhelmed by a cluttered desktop, macOS provides a powerful multitasking feature designed to solve this exact problem. It is called Stage Manager, and it completely reinvents how your Mac handles open windows by placing your current task front-and-center while neatly organizing everything else into a visual sidebar.
How to Enable Stage Manager
Stage Manager is not turned on by default; it must be manually activated from the macOS Control Center.
- Look at the extreme top-right corner of your Mac’s screen (the menu bar).
- Click the Control Center icon (it looks like two small toggle switches).
- Locate the Stage Manager tile (which features an icon of a large window next to three smaller windows).
- Click the tile once to turn it on. The icon will turn white, indicating the feature is active.
How Stage Manager Organizes Your Screen
The moment you enable Stage Manager, a dramatic shift will occur on your desktop.
- The Center Stage: Whichever application you are currently actively using (e.g., Safari) will automatically move to the direct center of your screen.
- The Sidebar Cast: Every other open application (e.g., Mail, Calendar, Notes) will immediately shrink down into small, live thumbnail previews and neatly stack themselves in a vertical column on the left side of your screen.
This layout forces you to focus entirely on one single task. When you are ready to check your email, simply glance to the left and click the Mail thumbnail in the sidebar. The Mail app will instantly fly to the center of the screen, and Safari will automatically shrink down and take Mail’s place in the sidebar. It is a seamless, fluid way to switch tasks without ever losing track of where a window went.
How to Group Apps Together
While Stage Manager focuses on single-tasking, there are times when you absolutely need two windows open simultaneously—for example, if you are dragging photos from a Finder window directly into a Word document.
You can easily group apps together in Stage Manager. Simply click the thumbnail of the Word document in your sidebar, and physically drag it to the center of the screen alongside the Finder window. The two apps are now grouped together.
If you click Safari in the sidebar, both Word and Finder will shrink down and group themselves into a single thumbnail preview on the left. When you click that thumbnail later, both Word and Finder will instantly reappear in the exact center-screen layout you left them in, allowing you to create highly efficient, multi-app workspaces.
