How to Disable the Keyboard Click Typing Sound on an iPad

Every time you press a virtual key on the iPad’s on-screen keyboard, the device plays a distinct “click” sound. While this audio feedback is designed to mimic the tactile sensation of typing on a physical keyboard, it can become incredibly annoying very quickly. If you are sitting in a quiet library, an office environment, or on a crowded train, the constant clicking of your iPad keyboard is a major distraction to everyone around you. Fortunately, Apple allows you to permanently disable this sound effect deep within the system settings.

How to Turn Off Keyboard Clicks

You do not need to put your entire iPad on mute to silence the keyboard. You can disable the typing sound specifically while leaving other audio (like videos and notifications) turned on.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar menu, scroll down and tap on Sounds.
  3. In the main window on the right side of the screen, scroll all the way down to the bottom.
  4. Look for the setting labeled Keyboard Clicks.
  5. Tap the green switch next to “Keyboard Clicks” to toggle it to the off (grey) position.

The change is instantaneous. The next time you open a text field (like in Safari or the Notes app) and begin typing, the virtual keyboard will be completely silent.

Silencing the Lock Sound

While you are in the Sounds menu, you might also want to disable the other most common system noise: the loud “click” the iPad makes every time you press the physical power button to put it to sleep.

Directly below the Keyboard Clicks setting, you will see an option for Lock Sound. Toggle this switch to the off (grey) position as well. Now, your iPad will be entirely silent when typing and locking, ensuring you do not disturb anyone in a quiet environment.
