Video chapters are one of the most critical user experience features on YouTube, especially for long-form tutorials, podcasts, or documentary-style content. Chapters break up a long video into easily digestible, clickable segments on the playback progress bar, allowing viewers to instantly jump to the specific information they need. While creators have traditionally had to manually watch their videos and type out timestamps in the description box, Google now utilizes machine learning to automatically generate these chapters for you within YouTube Studio.
How Automatic Chapters Work
YouTube’s AI analyzes the audio transcript, on-screen text, and visual transitions within your video to identify distinct topic changes. It then automatically assigns titles to these segments and places the chapter markers on the timeline. Because it relies heavily on speech recognition, this feature works best on videos with clear narration and distinct visual breaks (such as title cards).
Enabling Automatic Chapters for a Specific Video
You can enable or disable this feature on a per-video basis during the upload process or after a video has already been published.
- Navigate to YouTube Studio (studio.youtube.com) and log into your creator account.
- In the left-hand navigation menu, click on Content to view your video library.
- Click the Details (pencil icon) next to the video you want to modify.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the main “Details” page and click the blue SHOW MORE button to reveal advanced settings.
- Locate the section labeled Automatic chapters.
- Check the box next to Allow automatic chapters and key moments (when available and eligible).
- Click the Save button in the top right corner.
It may take up to 24 hours for YouTube’s algorithms to process the video and generate the chapters. Once complete, they will automatically appear on the video player.
Enabling Automatic Chapters Globally (For All Future Uploads)
If you produce content that consistently benefits from chapters, you can set this automation as a default for your entire channel.
- In the left-hand menu of YouTube Studio, click on Settings (gear icon) at the very bottom.
- In the Settings pop-up, select Upload defaults.
- Click on the Advanced settings tab at the top.
- Under the “Automatic chapters” header, check the box for Allow automatic chapters and key moments (when available and eligible).
- Click Save.
Limitations and Manual Overrides
The AI is highly effective but not perfect. It may occasionally misinterpret a topic change or generate a confusing chapter title. Furthermore, the feature is not available for videos containing inappropriate language, videos that have received copyright strikes, or channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers.
If the AI generates inaccurate chapters, you can easily override them. The moment you manually type at least three timestamps into your video’s description box (starting with 00:00), YouTube will instantly disable the automatic chapters for that specific video and strictly adhere to your manual list.
