Whenever you press the volume up or down keys on your keyboard, Windows 11 displays a large, floating “On-Screen Display” (OSD) in the top-left or bottom-center of your screen. This OSD shows the current volume level and, annoyingly, often displays the media metadata (album art and track name) of whatever Spotify or YouTube tab is currently playing in the background.
This pop-up can take several seconds to fade away. If you are gaming, presenting your screen, or watching a movie, this intrusive black box obscuring the corner of your screen every time you adjust the volume is incredibly distracting. Surprisingly, Microsoft offers absolutely no native toggle in the Settings app to turn this off.
To completely eradicate the volume OSD, you must rely on a lightweight, open-source utility designed specifically for this exact annoyance.
The Solution: HideVolumeOSD
Because the volume OSD is deeply hardcoded into the Windows Explorer shell, modifying the registry to disable it usually breaks other shell components. The safest and most effective method is a tiny, free utility created by developer Markus Göllnitz called HideVolumeOSD.
This program does exactly one thing: it hooks into the Windows API and silences the visual volume indicator while leaving the actual volume control perfectly intact.
Step 1: Download and Install
- Open your web browser and search for “HideVolumeOSD” (the official site is typically hosted on venturi.de).
- Download the latest
.exeinstaller. (It is completely free, open-source, and highly trusted by the Windows power user community). - Run the installer.
Step 2: Choose Your Installation Mode
During the installation wizard, you will be presented with a critical choice on how the program should run. You have two options:
- Tray Icon Version: This installs the program as a standard application. It places a small icon in your system tray (next to the clock). You can click this icon at any time to toggle the volume OSD on or off instantly.
- Silent Version (Recommended): This installs the program as a silent background Windows Service. It will automatically start when your computer boots, hide the OSD permanently, and display no icons or menus anywhere. It is completely invisible.
For a permanent fix, select the Silent Version and finish the installation.
Step 3: Test the Results
As soon as the installation finishes, the change is active.
- Press your keyboard’s physical volume up or volume down keys.
- Listen for the audio level changing in your headphones.
You will hear the volume change, but the screen will remain completely clear. The intrusive black box, along with any media metadata, is gone forever.
How to Restore the OSD
If you installed the Tray Icon version, simply click the icon in your taskbar to turn the OSD back on. If you installed the Silent Version, you must open the Windows Start Menu, search for “Add or remove programs”, find HideVolumeOSD in the list, and uninstall it. The standard Windows volume pop-up will immediately return.
