How to Enable the Hidden Apple Music Equalizer on iOS

If you primarily listen to music using the native Apple Music app on your iPhone, you might have noticed that the audio sometimes sounds a bit flat, especially if you are using standard AirPods or a budget Bluetooth speaker. Unlike third-party apps like Spotify, which include a built-in equalizer directly on the “Now Playing” screen, Apple hides its audio tuning features deep inside the iOS system settings.

By enabling the built-in EQ, you can dramatically boost the bass, enhance the vocals, or reduce harsh treble frequencies.

How to Find and Enable the Equalizer

  1. Open the main Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down significantly until you find the Music app icon and tap it.
  3. In the Music settings menu, scroll down to the “Audio” section.
  4. Tap on EQ (which will likely say “Off” next to it).

Unlike professional audio mixing software, Apple does not provide a visual slider board where you can manually adjust individual frequency bands. Instead, they provide a list of over 20 highly optimized, pre-configured EQ presets.

Choosing the Right Preset

To preview how a preset sounds, simply start playing a song in the Apple Music app, leave the music playing in the background, and return to the EQ menu. As you tap different options, the audio profile will change instantly.

  • Bass Booster: This is the most popular setting. It artificially inflates the low-end frequencies, making kick drums and basslines sound significantly punchier. This is ideal if you are listening through small, cheap earbuds that lack natural hardware bass.
  • Late Night: This is a highly specialized, dynamic equalizer. It actually compresses the audio range, boosting the quietest sounds while simultaneously lowering the loudest peaks. It is designed to let you hear all the details of a song at very low volumes without waking up your housemates.
  • Vocal Booster / Spoken Word: If you are listening to a podcast or an audiobook through the Music app, these settings cut out the distracting bass and isolate the human voice frequencies for maximum clarity.

It is important to note that this equalizer setting only affects audio played through the official Apple Music app. It will not alter the sound profile of YouTube, Spotify, or mobile games.
