How to Force Quit an Unresponsive App on an Android Phone

Unlike desktop operating systems, Android is designed to manage background applications automatically. When you swipe an app away from your “Recent Apps” screen, it doesn’t actually close the program; it simply hides it and places it in a suspended state in the system memory. 99% of the time, this is exactly what you want.

However, if an application completely freezes, refuses to load new data, or gets stuck in an infinite loading loop, simply swiping it away won’t fix the problem. The app’s broken code is still running silently in the background. To resolve this, you must forcefully terminate the application process at the system level.

How to Force Quit an App Using the App Info Menu

The most direct method to kill an unresponsive app bypasses the recent apps screen entirely.

  1. Locate the icon for the frozen app on your Android home screen or in your app drawer.
  2. Press and hold your finger on the app icon until a small pop-up menu appears.
  3. Look for a small “i” inside a circle or a button labeled App Info and tap it. (This instantly takes you to the deep system settings for that specific application).
  4. At the bottom (or top) of the screen, you will see a prominent button labeled Force Stop. Tap it.
  5. A warning prompt will appear stating that forcing an app to stop may cause it to misbehave. Tap OK or Force Stop to confirm.

The button will turn grey, indicating that the application process, along with all its background services and cached memory, has been completely eradicated from the active RAM.

How to Force Quit an App via the Main Settings

If you cannot find the app icon on your home screen, you can locate it through the main system settings.

  1. Open your phone’s main Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Apps (or Apps & notifications, depending on your phone manufacturer).
  3. Tap See all apps to generate an alphabetical list of every piece of software on your device.
  4. Scroll through the list and tap the name of the unresponsive application.
  5. Tap the Force Stop button and confirm the action.

After forcing the app to stop, return to your home screen and launch the application normally. It will perform a cold boot, pulling fresh data from the internet and resolving almost all temporary software glitches.
