If you have hundreds of files and folders stored in your Google Drive, locating a specific, frequently used document—like a monthly budget spreadsheet or an active project folder—can require a lot of annoying scrolling and searching. To bypass this entirely, you can “Star” your most important files, adding them to a dedicated, instantly accessible favorites list.
How to Star a File or Folder
Starring a file does not move it or change its actual location; it simply adds a convenient shortcut to it.
- Open your web browser and navigate to Google Drive.
- Locate the file or folder you want to bookmark.
- Right-click directly on the file or folder icon.
- From the dropdown menu that appears, click on Organize.
- In the secondary menu, click on Add to Starred (represented by a star icon).
A small star icon will immediately appear next to the file’s name, confirming that it has been successfully added to your favorites list.
How to Access Your Starred Files
Once you have starred your important files, you can access them with a single click, completely bypassing the messy folder structure of your main drive.
- Look at the permanent menu on the far left side of your Google Drive screen.
- Click on the section labeled Starred (it has a star icon next to it).
This section acts as your personal VIP area. It will exclusively display the files and folders you have explicitly starred, regardless of where they are actually buried in your Drive. Because this list is typically very short, finding your daily documents takes only a fraction of a second.
How to Remove a Star
When a project is finished and you no longer need quick access to its folder, you should remove the star to keep your favorites list clean and uncluttered.
- Go to your Starred section.
- Right-click the file or folder you want to remove.
- Hover over Organize and click on Remove from Starred.
The file will disappear from the Starred list, but it will remain perfectly safe in its original location in your main Google Drive.
