We have all experienced the frustration of opening multiple tabs in Google Chrome, only to have a loud video advertisement or an auto-playing news clip start blasting audio from an unknown tab. While Chrome used to have a simple “Mute Tab” right-click option, Google modified this feature in newer versions to mute the entire website domain. Fortunately, you can still silence specific tabs using Chrome’s Site Settings.
How to Mute a Single Tab in Google Chrome
If you only want to silence the specific page you are currently viewing, you must navigate into the individual permission controls for that website.
- Click on the noisy tab to make it the active window.
- Look at the URL address bar at the top of the browser. To the immediate left of the website’s URL, you will see an icon (usually a padlock or a settings icon). Click on it.
- A small dropdown menu will appear showing the site’s connection status. Click on Site settings at the bottom of this menu.
- A new Chrome settings tab will open, displaying a long list of permissions specific to that website (like Location, Camera, and Microphone).
- Scroll down the list until you find Sound.
- Click the dropdown menu next to Sound (which is likely set to “Automatic”) and change it to Mute.
- Close the settings tab and return to the noisy website. You may need to refresh the page for the change to fully take effect.
The audio on that specific tab will now be completely silenced. Keep in mind that because this change was made in the Site Settings, Chrome will remember your preference. The next time you visit that specific website in the future, it will remain muted until you go back into the settings and change the dropdown menu back to “Automatic” or “Allow.”
