When you first pair a new Apple Watch with your iPhone, Apple automatically assigns it a generic name based on your Apple ID (e.g., “John’s Apple Watch”). While this is perfectly functional, you might want to personalize the name to make it easier to identify in your Bluetooth menu, especially if you have multiple family members in the same household who also own Apple Watches.
How to Rename Your Apple Watch Using Your iPhone
Unlike some settings which can be adjusted directly on your wrist, changing the broadcasted name of your Apple Watch requires the use of the companion Watch app on your paired iPhone.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Ensure you are on the My Watch tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- At the very top of the General menu, tap on About.
- Tap on Name (the first option in the list).
- Tap the small X icon on the right side of the text field to clear the current name, or simply tap the text to bring up the keyboard and modify it.
- Type in your desired new name.
- Tap Done on the keyboard to save the changes.
The new name will sync to your Apple Watch immediately. The next time you look for your watch in a Bluetooth pairing menu on a different device, or look at your iCloud devices list, it will appear under the new customized name.
