The Windows 11 Start menu is heavily focused on pinning applications and recommending recent files. By default, there is no obvious way to pin a specific folder—like your current work project or your primary photo archive—directly to the front page of the Start menu for quick access.
However, Windows 11 does include a hidden mechanism to pin any folder you want as a standard tile on the Start menu, bypassing the need to constantly navigate through File Explorer.
In this guide, you will learn the exact steps to pin custom folders to the Windows 11 Start menu.
Step 1: Locate Your Target Folder
The pinning process begins within File Explorer, not the Start menu itself.
- Click the File Explorer icon (the yellow folder) on your taskbar, or press Windows Key + E.
- Navigate through your drives until you find the specific folder you want to pin. Note: You must be looking at the folder icon itself, not inside the folder.
Step 2: Pin the Folder to Start
Windows 11 hides the “Pin to Start” option behind a specific context menu action.
- Right-click on the folder you wish to pin.
- Depending on your version of Windows 11, you will either see the option immediately, or you will need to click Show more options at the bottom of the menu to reveal the classic context menu.
- Locate and click the option labelled Pin to Start.
Step 3: Organise Your Start Menu
Once you click the button, Windows instantly creates a shortcut to that folder on your Start menu.
- Press the Windows Key to open your Start menu.
- Scroll down through your pinned apps. Because newly pinned items are added to the very end of the list, your folder will likely be on the second page. Scroll down to find it.
- Click and drag the folder icon to move it to the very top row of your Start menu for instant access.
Bonus: Enabling the System Folder Shortcuts
In addition to pinning custom folders, Windows 11 allows you to place tiny icons for core system folders (like Downloads, Documents, and Pictures) directly next to the Power button on the Start menu.
- Open the Settings app (Windows Key + I).
- Navigate to Personalisation > Start.
- Click on Folders.
- You will see a list of toggles for various system locations (Settings, File Explorer, Documents, Downloads, Music, etc.).
- Toggle on the ones you use most frequently.
When you open your Start menu now, you will see a row of minimalist icons flanking the Power button, giving you one-click access to your most vital directories.
