Google Maps is incredibly helpful for navigating to new restaurants or finding your way home from an unfamiliar city. However, because it logs every single place you search for and navigate to, it can also become a massive privacy risk if someone else gains access to your phone or Google account. Fortunately, it is very easy to clear your Google Maps search history, either manually or automatically.
How to Delete Individual Searches (The Quick Way)
If you just want to remove a few specific locations you recently searched for without wiping your entire history, you can do this directly from the search bar.
- Open the Google Maps app on your iPhone or Android.
- Tap the Search here bar at the top of the screen.
- You will see a list of your recent searches below the bar.
- Find the location you want to remove, and swipe left on it (or tap the X next to the location, depending on your device).
- The location will immediately disappear from your recent searches.
How to Clear Your Entire Maps History
If you want to completely wipe the slate clean, you have to dig slightly deeper into your Google Account settings.
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap on your Profile Picture in the top right corner.
- Tap on Settings (the gear icon).
- Scroll down and tap on Maps history.
- This opens a Google Account web page showing all your Maps activity.
- Tap the Delete button (it has a small drop-down arrow next to it).
- Select Delete all time.
- Google will ask you to confirm. Tap Delete again to permanently erase your history.
How to Set Up Auto-Delete
The best way to manage your privacy is to let Google clean up your history automatically. You can tell Google to permanently delete any location data that is older than 3, 18, or 36 months.
- Go to Settings > Maps history just like in the previous step.
- Near the top of the page, look for the box that says Auto-delete.
- Tap on Auto-delete (On) or Auto-delete (Off) depending on its current status.
- Select “Auto-delete activity older than” and choose your preferred timeframe from the drop-down menu (e.g., 3 months).
- Tap Next, review the changes, and tap Confirm.
What About Google Timeline?
Note that clearing your Maps Search History is different from clearing your Location History (Timeline). Search history is what you type into the app. Location History is the passive GPS tracking that records where you physically travel every day.
To pause or delete your physical tracking, go back to your Profile Picture menu, tap Your Timeline, tap the three dots in the corner, and select Settings and privacy. From there, you can choose to delete your Location History entirely.
Conclusion
Taking control of your Google Maps history is a simple but vital step in protecting your digital privacy. By setting up auto-delete, you ensure that your past movements and searches don’t stay on Google’s servers forever.
