How to Turn Off Bluetooth on a Mac

Whether you want to save battery life on your MacBook, prevent your computer from automatically connecting to a nearby speaker or headset you are not using, or force your AirPods to switch from your Mac to your iPhone, turning off Bluetooth on macOS is a quick operation. This guide covers two methods, plus a critical warning for desktop Mac users.

When Should You Turn Off Bluetooth?

Disabling Bluetooth is useful in a few common scenarios:

  • Battery conservation: The Bluetooth radio draws a small but continuous amount of power. On battery, disabling it when you are not using any wireless peripherals can extend your available charge.
  • Forcing device switching: If your AirPods or headphones keep connecting to your Mac when you want them on your iPhone, turning Bluetooth off on the Mac forces the headphones to look for another device.
  • Preventing unwanted connections: In public spaces or offices, disabling Bluetooth can stop your Mac from discovering and potentially auto-connecting to unfamiliar devices.
  • Troubleshooting: A quick Bluetooth off-then-on cycle can resolve many connection problems with wireless mice, keyboards, and speakers.

Method 1: Using the Menu Bar (Fastest)

The Control Centre in your menu bar is the quickest way to toggle Bluetooth without opening any menus or settings windows.

  1. Look at the top-right corner of your Mac’s screen and click the Control Centre icon (it looks like two small toggle switches side by side).
  2. The Control Centre panel will drop down. Click on the Bluetooth section — you can click the icon or the word “Bluetooth.”
  3. An expanded Bluetooth menu will appear. Toggle the switch at the top to the Off position.

Alternative shortcut: If you have added the Bluetooth icon directly to your menu bar (the angular “B” symbol), you can click it directly and select Turn Bluetooth Off from the dropdown, saving even more steps.

Method 2: Using System Settings

For a more deliberate approach through the main settings interface:

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences if you are using macOS Monterey or an older version).
  3. Click on Bluetooth in the left-hand sidebar menu.
  4. At the very top of the Bluetooth settings panel, click the toggle switch to turn Bluetooth Off. The toggle will turn grey and the status label will change from “On” to “Off.”

Critical Warning for Desktop Mac Users (iMac, Mac Studio, Mac Mini)

If you are using a desktop Mac with a wireless Apple Magic Mouse and/or wireless Magic Keyboard, do not turn off Bluetooth unless you have a wired USB mouse or keyboard available to reconnect to your computer immediately afterwards.

The moment Bluetooth is disabled, your wireless Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard will disconnect instantly. You will have no way to click the Bluetooth toggle again or control your computer. You will be forced to locate and plug in a physical USB mouse or keyboard to re-enable Bluetooth.

In this situation, plug a wired mouse into any available USB-A or USB-C port on your Mac, then navigate back to System Settings > Bluetooth and turn it back on.
