By default, macOS displays a small battery icon in the top right corner of your MacBook’s menu bar that gives a rough visual indication of remaining charge. However, if you frequently work away from a power outlet and need to accurately manage how much time you have left before finding a charger, knowing the exact percentage is far more useful than interpreting a shrinking icon. Enabling the battery percentage display takes just a few seconds.
Why Show Battery Percentage?
The visual battery icon alone can be misleading. A battery icon that appears “half full” could represent anywhere from 40% to 60%, a significant difference if you are mid-flight or in a long meeting. Displaying the exact number gives you:
- Precise awareness of when to start saving power or look for a socket.
- Better understanding of how quickly certain apps drain your battery.
- Confidence when making decisions like starting a video call or downloading a large file.
How to Show Battery Percentage on macOS Ventura, Sonoma, and Later
Apple redesigned the System Settings app significantly in macOS Ventura. If your Mac is running Ventura (13) or newer, follow these steps:
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings from the dropdown menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Control Center.
- On the right side of the window, scroll down until you find the Battery section.
- Toggle the switch next to Show Percentage to the ON position (it will turn blue/green).
The exact battery percentage number will appear instantly next to the battery icon in your menu bar, updating in real time as your battery charges or drains.
How to Show Battery Percentage on macOS Monterey and Earlier
If you are using macOS Monterey (12), Big Sur (11), Catalina (10.15), or an older version, the option is located in the older System Preferences interface:
- Click the Apple menu () and select System Preferences.
- Click on Dock & Menu Bar.
- In the left sidebar of the Dock & Menu Bar window, scroll down to the “Other Modules” section and click on Battery.
- Check the box next to Show Percentage on the right side of the window.
On very old Mac systems running macOS Mojave or earlier, you can also simply click directly on the battery icon in the menu bar, and a dropdown will appear with a “Show Percentage” option you can toggle from there.
Understanding Battery Health on a Mac
Beyond the percentage, macOS also tracks your battery’s overall health over time. To check this:
- Hold the Option key on your keyboard and click the battery icon in the menu bar. macOS will display your battery’s current condition (e.g., “Normal” or “Service Recommended”).
- For more detail, go to System Settings > Battery > Battery Health. This screen shows your battery’s maximum capacity as a percentage of its original design capacity.
A healthy MacBook battery should maintain above 80% capacity through its first 1,000 charge cycles. If yours drops below this threshold, Apple considers the battery ready for replacement.
