How to Change Your iPhone Ringtone

The default iPhone ringtone (“Reflection” on newer models, or “Opening” on older ones) is iconic, but it can also be incredibly confusing when you are in a crowded room and someone else’s phone rings. Changing your ringtone is one of the easiest ways to personalize your device and ensure you always know when your phone is the one ringing.

How to Change Your Default iPhone Ringtone

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down slightly and tap on Sounds & Haptics (on some older iOS versions, this might just say “Sounds”).
  3. Under the “Sounds and Vibration Patterns” section, tap on Ringtone.
  4. You will see a long list of built-in tones. Tap on any ringtone in the list to hear a short audio preview.
  5. When you find one you like, simply leave a blue checkmark next to it.
  6. Tap the “Back” arrow in the top left to save your choice and exit.

Pro Tip: If you don’t like any of the modern options, scroll to the very bottom of the ringtone list and tap Classic to find the retro iPhone sounds like “Marimba” and “Old Car Horn.”

How to Set a Custom Ringtone for a Specific Person

You can assign a unique ringtone to specific friends or family members so you know exactly who is calling before you even look at the screen.

  1. Open the Contacts app (or the Contacts tab in the Phone app).
  2. Tap on the name of the person you want to customize.
  3. Tap Edit in the top-right corner of their contact card.
  4. Scroll down and tap Ringtone. (By default, it will say “Default”).
  5. Select a new tone specifically for them. You can also customize their text tone here.
  6. Tap Done in the top-right corner to save.
