Your Mac login picture greets you every time you turn on your computer and appears next to your name in system menus. While Apple provides several abstract icons by default, you can easily personalize your account by uploading a photo of yourself, a pet, or even setting up an animated Memoji.
How to Change Your Picture (macOS Ventura and Newer)
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings.
- Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Users & Groups.
- On the right side of the window, you will see your account name and your current circular profile picture. Click directly on the picture.
- A photo picker will pop up with several options:
- Memoji: Create a customized 3D avatar that can actually react and track your mouse movements on the login screen.
- Emoji: Choose any standard emoji character on a colored background.
- Photos: Select an image from your iCloud Photo Library.
- To use a custom image saved on your hard drive, simply open Finder, locate your photo, and drag-and-drop it directly onto the circular picture in the System Settings window.
- Use the zoom slider to adjust the framing, then click Save.
How to Change Your Picture (macOS Monterey and Older)
- Go to the Apple menu () > System Preferences.
- Click on Users & Groups.
- Select your user account from the left panel.
- Hover your mouse over your current picture and click the word Edit that appears.
- Choose a new image from the available categories or drag a photo from Finder into the window.
- Adjust the crop and click Save.
