How to Enable File Sharing on a Mac to Connect with Windows

In modern office environments and multi-device households, it is incredibly common to have both Apple Mac computers and Windows PCs on the same local network. Moving large video files or folders of documents between the two operating systems using USB flash drives is slow and tedious.

Fortunately, macOS has native support for SMB (Server Message Block), the exact same network file-sharing protocol used by Windows. With a few clicks, you can turn a specific folder on your Mac into a shared network drive that any authorized Windows PC on your Wi-Fi network can access.

Step 1: Enable File Sharing on the Mac

By default, macOS keeps its file system entirely locked down from the network for security reasons. You must explicitly turn sharing on.

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
  2. In the left sidebar, click on General, then click on Sharing on the right.
  3. Look for the toggle switch next to File Sharing and turn it On.
  4. Click the small “i” (Information) button next to the File Sharing toggle to configure what actually gets shared.

Step 2: Choose Which Folders to Share

You should never share your entire Mac hard drive. Instead, create or designate a specific folder for sharing.

  1. In the File Sharing configuration window, you will see a “Shared Folders” list. By default, your Public folder is likely already there.
  2. To add a different folder (like a dedicated “Transfer” folder on your Desktop), click the + (Plus) button below the list.
  3. Navigate to the folder you want to share, select it, and click Add.
  4. Next, look at the “Users” list on the right side. Ensure your Mac user account has “Read & Write” permissions so you can fully control the files from the Windows machine.

Step 3: Enable Windows Compatibility (SMB)

Even though File Sharing is on, macOS might only be broadcasting to other Macs. You must explicitly enable Windows SMB sharing.

  1. Still in the File Sharing configuration window, click the Options… button.
  2. Check the box that says Share files and folders using SMB.
  3. Below that, you will see a list of user accounts on your Mac. You must check the box next to your specific username. This allows Windows to authenticate using your Mac’s login credentials.
  4. You will be prompted to enter your Mac password to confirm this action.
  5. Click Done.

Before closing System Settings, look near the top of the Sharing window. Note your Mac’s local network IP address (it usually looks like smb://192.168.1.50). You will need these numbers for the Windows PC.

Step 4: Connect from the Windows PC

Now move to your Windows computer, ensuring it is connected to the exact same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network as the Mac.

  1. Open File Explorer on Windows.
  2. Click in the address bar at the very top (where it says “This PC” or “Quick Access”).
  3. Type two backslashes followed by the Mac’s IP address you noted earlier (e.g., \\192.168.1.50) and press Enter.
  4. A Windows Security dialogue box will appear asking for network credentials. Enter the Username and Password you use to log into your Mac.
  5. Check “Remember my credentials” if you plan to do this often, and click OK.

The shared folder from your Mac will instantly appear in the Windows File Explorer. You can now drag, drop, copy, and delete files exactly as if they were on a local Windows hard drive.
