When you receive an email confirming a cross-country flight itinerary, a boutique hotel reservation, or a highly sought-after restaurant booking, manually typing all of those dates, times, and confirmation numbers into your digital calendar is a tedious, error-prone chore. Because Gmail and Google Calendar are deeply integrated within the overarching Google ecosystem, you can instruct Google’s artificial intelligence to silently scan your incoming emails, identify upcoming events, and automatically plot them directly onto your calendar without you ever lifting a finger.
How to Enable “Events from Gmail”
This setting must be enabled from the desktop version of Google Calendar, but the results will sync perfectly to your smartphone app.
- Open your web browser and navigate to Google Calendar on your desktop computer. Ensure you are signed in.
- Click the Settings gear icon located in the top right corner of the screen (next to your profile picture).
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, scroll down and click on Events from Gmail.
- Look for the main checkbox labeled Show events automatically created by Gmail in my calendar. Ensure this box is checked.
How the Automation Works
Once this feature is enabled, the automation is entirely hands-off. When a recognized vendor (like Delta Airlines or OpenTable) sends you a confirmation email, Google Calendar will instantly read the metadata. A completely formatted event will magically appear on your calendar grid, complete with the flight number, the exact departure time (adjusted for time zones), and the physical address of the hotel.
Crucially, if you open the event on your calendar, you will see a small link that says “View source email.” Clicking this instantly opens the original Gmail message, ensuring you always have quick access to the barcode or the PDF receipt without needing to search through your inbox.
