How to Translate a Google Docs Document into Another Language

If you need to send a business proposal to a client in Germany, or share a school newsletter with Spanish-speaking parents, you do not need to copy and paste paragraphs of text back and forth between your document and a separate translation website. Google Docs has the massive power of Google Translate built directly into its core menu system, allowing you to instantly translate entire, multi-page documents with a few clicks.

How to Translate Your Document

The translation tool is incredibly safe to use because it does not overwrite your original work.

  1. Open the document you want to translate in Google Docs on a desktop web browser.
  2. Click Tools in the top menu bar.
  3. Scroll down the list and click Translate document.

A small popup window will appear in the center of the screen.

  1. Google Docs will ask you to provide a New document title. By default, it will suggest “Translated copy of [Your Original Title].” You can change this to whatever you prefer.
  2. Click the Choose a language dropdown menu.
  3. Scroll through the massive list of over 100 supported languages and select your target language (e.g., French, Spanish, Japanese).
  4. Click the blue Translate button.

How the Translation is Saved

The moment you click Translate, a brand-new browser tab will open. Inside this new tab, you will see a complete, freshly translated version of your document.

Crucially, all of your original formatting is preserved. If you had bold text, bulleted lists, tables, or carefully placed images in the original English document, Google Docs will maintain that exact layout in the new Spanish or French document.

This translated copy is automatically saved as a completely separate file in your Google Drive. Your original English document remains completely untouched in its original browser tab, allowing you to safely share the translated version without fear of losing your original work.
