How to Use the iPhone Hidden Calculator Trick to Delete Digits

The native Calculator app on the iPhone is beautifully designed, but it has one glaring flaw that frustrates millions of users: there is no visible backspace button. If you are calculating a long grocery list or splitting a complex dinner bill, typing “458” instead of “459” feels like a disaster. Most users sigh, press the “C” (Clear) button, delete the entire number, and start over from scratch. Fortunately, you do not have to do this. Apple built a hidden delete function directly into the display.

The Hidden Swipe Gesture

Apple hid the backspace button behind a completely invisible, intuitive swipe gesture. It works exactly like a backspace key on a physical keyboard, removing only the very last digit you entered.

  1. Open the Calculator app and type a long number (e.g., 123456).
  2. Place your finger directly on the black screen area at the top where the numbers are displayed.
  3. Swipe your finger horizontally to the left or to the right.

Instantly, the last digit (the 6) will vanish, leaving 12345. If you swipe again, the 5 will vanish. You can swipe as many times as you need to correct your mistake, without ever losing the rest of your calculation.

The Scientific Calculator Trick

While you are using the Calculator app, there is another hidden feature that completely transforms the tool, especially for students or engineers.

If you are looking at the standard layout with basic addition and subtraction, simply rotate your iPhone sideways into landscape mode. (Ensure your Portrait Orientation Lock is disabled in the Control Center). The basic number pad will instantly expand into a massive, 30-button Scientific Calculator.

This hidden mode grants you access to square roots, exponential functions, logarithms, and trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent). And yes, the hidden swipe-to-delete gesture still works perfectly in this advanced mode, ensuring you never have to clear a complex string of calculations due to a single typo.
