While you can manually reduce your screen brightness and close background applications, Windows 11 includes a dedicated “Battery Saver” mode designed to instantly stretch your remaining power as far as possible. Rather than waiting until your laptop dies, you can configure Windows to activate this mode automatically.
What Does Battery Saver Actually Do?
When Battery Saver activates, Windows 11 stops performing non-essential tasks to conserve power. It automatically dims the brightness of your display, pauses background email synchronization, stops Live Tiles from updating, and prevents background applications from waking up the processor. You will still be able to write documents and browse the web, but the operating system will feel slightly more conservative.
How to Configure Automatic Battery Saver
You can tell Windows exactly when to panic and trigger this mode.
- Click the Start button and open the Settings app (the gear icon).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click System.
- In the main window, click on Power & battery.
- Scroll down to the “Battery” section and click the downward arrow next to Battery saver to expand the menu.

The display backlight is the single largest consumer of power on a modern laptop.
