If you have ever started a massive file download or a long video rendering process only to return an hour later and find your PC has gone to sleep, you know the frustration of Windows power management. While you can dive into the Control Panel and manually change your power plan to “Never Sleep,” remembering to change it back later is tedious. Microsoft provides an elegant solution to this problem through a tool called PowerToys Awake.
What is Microsoft PowerToys?
PowerToys is an official suite of advanced system utilities developed by Microsoft in collaboration with the open-source community. It is designed to add power-user features to Windows 10 and Windows 11 that are not included in the standard operating system. You can download PowerToys for free directly from the Microsoft Store or via GitHub.
What is PowerToys Awake?
Awake is a specific module within the PowerToys suite. Its sole purpose is to override your Windows power plan and prevent your computer from going to sleep or turning off its display, without actually modifying your underlying system settings. Once you turn Awake off, your PC instantly reverts to its normal sleep schedule.
How to Configure and Use Awake
Once you have installed PowerToys, managing your PC’s sleep behavior is incredibly simple.
- Launch the PowerToys application from your Start Menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Awake.
- Ensure the toggle switch next to Enable Awake is turned On.
You now have three primary modes of operation to choose from under the “Behavior” section:
- Keep using the selected power plan: This is the default passive mode. Awake is running, but it allows Windows to go to sleep according to your normal settings.
- Keep awake indefinitely: This is the most common setting. When selected, your PC will never go to sleep until you manually change this setting back or close the PowerToys application.
- Keep awake temporarily: This allows you to set a specific expiration timer. You can tell your PC to stay awake for exactly 2 hours and 30 minutes. Once the timer expires, the PC will resume its normal sleep schedule.
Managing Display Behavior
By default, Awake keeps the computer’s processor running but allows the monitor to turn off to save energy and prevent screen burn-in. If you need the screen to stay on (for example, if you are monitoring a live dashboard), check the box labeled Keep screen on.
Using the System Tray Shortcut
You do not need to open the main PowerToys window every time you want to use Awake. When the module is enabled, a small blue coffee cup icon will appear in your Windows system tray (near the clock in the bottom right corner of your screen).
You can right-click this coffee cup icon at any time to instantly switch between the different Awake modes, making it the fastest way to keep your PC running during a critical task.
