The “Downloads” folder on a Mac is notorious for becoming a chaotic dumping ground. By default, macOS often sorts this folder alphabetically by file name, which means if you just downloaded an important PDF named “Zebra_Report.pdf”, it will instantly vanish to the very bottom of the folder beneath hundreds of older files. To maintain your sanity, you should force the Downloads folder to permanently sort everything by the exact date it was downloaded, keeping the newest files right at the top.
How to Sort by Date Added
You can instantly change how the Finder displays this specific folder without affecting how other folders (like Documents) are organized.
- Open a new Finder window.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Downloads to open the folder.
- In the very top menu bar of your Mac screen, click on View.
- From the dropdown menu, select Show View Options (or press Command + J).
- A small floating settings panel will appear.
- Look for the dropdown menu labelled Sort By.
- Click it and change the selection from “Name” to Date Added.
Instantly, the file you downloaded three seconds ago will jump to the very top left corner of the grid (or the top of the list view). As an added bonus, if you use the “List” view (Command + 2), you can click the small downward arrow next to the “Date Added” column header at the top of the window to easily flip the order, putting the absolute oldest, most forgotten files at the top so you can easily delete them to free up hard drive space.
