When you insert a photograph from your smartphone or an image downloaded from the internet into your Google Doc, it might accidentally appear sideways or upside down. Unlike advanced image editing software, Google Docs is primarily a word processor, so the image manipulation tools are somewhat hidden. However, you can easily rotate any image to the exact perfect angle without ever leaving your document.
How to Free-Rotate an Image
If you just need to quickly flip a picture right-side up, you can do it directly on the page.
- Click once on the image you want to rotate inside your Google Doc. A blue outline with several small square handles will appear around the picture.
- Look closely at the very top of the image, just above the blue border. You will see a small, blue circular dot attached to a short line.
- Click and hold your mouse button on that blue circular dot.
- Slowly drag your mouse left or right. As you drag, a ghostly outline of the image will show you the new angle.
- Let go of your mouse button when the image is perfectly straight.
Tip: If you want the image to snap to perfect 15-degree increments (making it incredibly easy to hit exactly 90 degrees or 180 degrees), hold down the Shift key on your keyboard while dragging the blue dot.
How to Rotate by Exact Degrees
If you need precision formatting for a professional report, you can type in the exact angle you want.
- Click the image to select it.
- In the top toolbar, click on the Image options button (it looks like three sliders).
- A side panel will open on the right. Expand the Size & Rotation menu.
- Under the “Rotate” section, you can type a specific number (like 90 or 270) into the Angle box, or use the quick 90° button to instantly flip the image on its side.
