By default, macOS allows you to drag and drop files anywhere you want on your desktop. While this offers complete freedom, it often results in a chaotic, messy screen where icons overlap each other and folders are scattered randomly across your wallpaper. If you want a clean, professional aesthetic, you can force your Mac to perfectly align every single icon into strict, invisible columns and rows.
How to Enable Snap to Grid
You can instantly tidy up your current mess and ensure future files stay organized.
- Close or minimize all your open applications so you can clearly see your Mac desktop.
- Right-click (or Control-click) anywhere on the empty wallpaper.
- From the popup menu, hover your mouse over Sort By.
- A small secondary menu will appear. Click on Snap to Grid.
The moment you click this option, every single file, folder, and image on your desktop will jump into perfectly spaced horizontal and vertical lines. Furthermore, if you try to drag an icon into a weird, overlapping position, it will automatically snap right back into the nearest available grid slot.
Sorting Alphabetically
If you want to go one step further and organize those perfectly spaced icons by their actual names, you can easily sort them alphabetically.
- Right-click the empty desktop wallpaper again.
- Hover over Sort By.
- Select Name.
Your Mac will instantly push all your icons to the right side of the screen (starting under your Macintosh HD drive) and organize them perfectly from A to Z, ensuring you never lose track of a downloaded file again.
