How to Disable Autoplay for Removable Drives in Windows 11

By default, whenever you plug a USB flash drive, an external hard drive, or an SD card into your Windows 11 PC, a small “AutoPlay” window instantly pops up on your screen asking what you want to do with the files. Not only is this popup annoying if you just wanted to quietly copy a file, but it can also be a minor security risk if the drive contains an automated malicious script. For a cleaner, safer experience, you can disable AutoPlay entirely.

How to Turn Off AutoPlay

You can adjust this behaviour quickly inside the main Windows Settings app.

  1. Open the Settings app by pressing Windows Key + I on your keyboard.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Scroll down the main window and click on AutoPlay.
  4. At the very top of this page, look for the master toggle switch labelled Use AutoPlay for all media and devices.
  5. Click the toggle to turn it Off.

The change is immediate. The next time you plug a USB thumb drive into your computer, absolutely nothing will pop up on your screen. The drive will mount silently in the background, allowing you to manually open File Explorer and navigate to your files at your own pace, without being interrupted.
