How to Disable the Windows Key on Your Keyboard for Gaming

There is nothing more frustrating than being in the middle of a tense, competitive multiplayer game, accidentally bumping the Windows key with your palm, and instantly getting thrown out to the desktop while the Start Menu aggressively opens over your game. If you are tired of losing matches because of this single key, you can disable it entirely using Microsoft’s official PowerToys software.

Installing Microsoft PowerToys

To safely remap keys without hacking the Windows registry, we need to download a free utility directly from Microsoft.

1. Open the Microsoft Store app on your Windows 11 PC.
2. Search for PowerToys and click the Install button.
3. Once installed, open the PowerToys application from your Start Menu.

How to Disable the Key

PowerToys contains dozens of tools; we only need the Keyboard Manager.

1. In the PowerToys left-hand sidebar, click on Keyboard Manager.
2. Under the “Keys” section in the main window, click the button labelled Remap a key.
3. A new window will open. Click the Plus (+) button under the word “Key.”
4. Under the “Select” column, click the Type button, press the Windows Key on your physical keyboard, and click OK. (It should now say “Win”).
5. Under the “To send” column on the right side, open the dropdown menu, scroll all the way to the top, and select Disable.
6. Click the blue OK button at the top right of the window, then click Continue Anyway on the warning prompt.

The change is immediate. Pressing the physical Windows key on your keyboard will now do absolutely nothing. If you ever want to re-enable it after you finish gaming, simply open PowerToys, go back to the Keyboard Manager, and click the small trash can icon next to your remapped rule to delete it.
