How to Insert a Mathematical Equation in Google Docs

If you are a student writing a mathematics assignment or a researcher drafting a scientific paper, typing complex formulas using a standard keyboard is incredibly difficult. You cannot easily type fractions, square roots, or Greek symbols like Pi (π) and Sigma (Σ). Fortunately, Google Docs includes a hidden Equation Editor designed specifically for this purpose.

How to Open the Equation Editor

  1. Open your document in Google Docs.
  2. Click exactly where you want the equation to appear in your text.
  3. In the top menu bar, click on Insert.
  4. Scroll down and click on Equation.

A small blue box will appear in your document, and a new “New equation” toolbar will appear directly below the main formatting bar.

How to Use the Equation Toolbar

The new toolbar is divided into five distinct categories containing every mathematical symbol you could possibly need.

  • Greek letters: Contains Alpha, Beta, Pi, Theta, and more.
  • Miscellaneous operations: Contains multiplication/division signs, infinity (∞), and degree symbols.
  • Relations: Contains greater than, less than, not equal to, and subset symbols.
  • Math operations: This is the most important menu. It contains the formatting structures for fractions, square roots, integrals, and limits.
  • Arrows: Contains various directional arrows used in chemistry and logic proofs.

To build an equation, simply click the structure you need (like a fraction). The cursor will automatically jump into the top half of the fraction. Type your number, then press the Right Arrow key on your keyboard to jump down to the bottom half. Using the arrow keys is the secret to navigating and building complex, multi-layered equations quickly.
