How to Automatically Lock Your Windows 11 PC When You Step Away (Dynamic Lock)

In a busy office environment, walking away from your desk and forgetting to press Windows Key + L can leave your sensitive files exposed to prying eyes. Rather than relying on your memory or a long screen timeout, you can configure Windows 11 to automatically lock itself the moment you walk away using a feature called Dynamic Lock.

How Dynamic Lock Works

Dynamic Lock pairs your Windows 11 PC with your smartphone via Bluetooth. When Windows detects that your phone’s Bluetooth signal has dropped (because you walked out of range), it assumes you have left the area and immediately locks the screen.

Step 1: Pair Your Smartphone

Before you can enable the feature, you must pair your phone (iPhone or Android) with your computer.

1. Ensure Bluetooth is turned on in your phone’s settings.
2. On your Windows 11 PC, open the Settings app (Windows Key + I).
3. Click on Bluetooth & devices in the left sidebar.
4. Click Add device, select Bluetooth, and choose your phone from the list to pair them.

Step 2: Enable Dynamic Lock

Once your phone is connected, you can activate the security feature.

1. In the Windows 11 Settings app, click on Accounts in the left sidebar.
2. Scroll down and click on Sign-in options.
3. Scroll down to the Additional settings section and click on Dynamic lock to expand the menu.
4. Check the box next to Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away.

Windows will briefly scan for your paired phone and confirm the connection. The next time you walk away to grab a coffee, your PC will automatically secure itself the moment you step out of Bluetooth range.
