How to Create a Fillable Form in Google Docs using Tables

While Google Forms is excellent for surveys, sometimes you need a formal, printable document—like an invoice, a contract, or an application—where users can type their answers directly into specific boxes. Since Google Docs doesn’t have native “form field” buttons like Microsoft Word, the best way to create a clean, professional fillable form is by using invisible tables.

Step 1: Insert a Table

Tables allow you to strictly control where text can be typed, preventing users from accidentally breaking your document’s layout.

  1. Open a blank Google Document.
  2. Click on Insert in the top menu bar, hover over Table, and select a 2×1 grid (two columns, one row).
  3. In the left cell, type your question or label (e.g., “Full Name:”).
  4. Leave the right cell blank. This is where the user will type their answer.
  5. To create more fields, simply click inside the right cell and press the Tab key to automatically add another row.

Step 2: Hide the Table Borders

To make the document look like a professional form rather than a spreadsheet, we need to hide the table borders.

  1. Click and drag your mouse to highlight the entire table.
  2. In the toolbar at the top of the screen, click on the Border width icon (it looks like a pencil with a line underneath).
  3. Change the width to 0pt. The table lines will disappear.

Step 3: Add Underlines for the Fillable Area

Now we want a visual line showing the user exactly where to type.

  1. Click inside the blank right cell (where the answer goes).
  2. Look for a small dropdown arrow appearing in the top-right corner of that specific cell. Click it and select the bottom border icon.
  3. With only the bottom border selected, go back to the top toolbar, click the Border width icon, and change it back to 1pt.
  4. Repeat this for all your answer cells.

You now have a perfectly formatted document with neat, underlined spaces. When a user clicks on the line and begins typing, the text will stay perfectly aligned, and the underline will dynamically expand without ruining your layout!
