What is the Steps Recorder?
Originally introduced in Windows 7, the Steps Recorder is a lightweight diagnostic tool that automatically captures screenshots and records every mouse click and keystroke you make. When you are finished, it compiles everything into a single, easy-to-read MHTML document that you can email directly to your tech support team.
How to Record Your Steps
- Press the Windows Key, type
Steps Recorder, and press Enter. - A small, unobtrusive toolbar will appear on your screen.
- When you are ready to reproduce your computer issue, click the Start Record button.
- Go about your business. Click on the menus, open the applications, and trigger the error message just like you normally would.
- If you want to highlight a specific area of the screen or add a typed note for the IT technician, click the Add Comment button, highlight the relevant area, type your message, and click OK.
- When the error has occurred and you are finished, click Stop Record.
Saving and Sending the File
As soon as you click stop, the tool will generate a preview of your recording. If you scroll down, you will see a detailed, step-by-step log of every single action you took, paired with screenshots highlighting where your mouse cursor was located.
Click the Save button at the top of the window. The tool will automatically compress the recording into a standard .zip file, which you can easily attach to an email or a support ticket. It is the fastest, most effective way to communicate complex Windows 11 issues.
