Constant notifications and pings can destroy your productivity. In Windows 11, Microsoft replaced the old “Focus Assist” feature with a more streamlined and powerful Do Not Disturb mode, alongside a dedicated Focus timer. These tools allow you to mute distractions temporarily so you can get work done.
How to Turn On “Do Not Disturb”
Turning on Do Not Disturb silences all notification banners and sounds. Notifications will silently go directly to your Notification Center for you to review later.
The Quick Settings Method
The fastest way to toggle this on or off is through your taskbar:
- Click on the clock/notification bell icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen (or press Windows Key + N).
- At the top right of the notification panel, you will see a bell icon with a “Zz” symbol. Click this icon to instantly toggle Do Not Disturb on or off.
The Settings App Method
- Open the Settings app (press Windows Key + I).
- Navigate to System > Notifications.
- Toggle the Do not disturb switch to On.
How to Automate Do Not Disturb
You can set Windows to silence notifications automatically based on your daily routine or specific activities. In the System > Notifications menu, click to expand the Turn on do not disturb automatically section. Here, you can enable rules such as:
- During specific hours: Set a daily schedule (e.g., mute notifications between 10 PM and 7 AM).
- When duplicating my display: Perfect for when you are presenting your screen in a meeting and don’t want personal messages popping up.
- When using an app in full-screen mode: Excellent for watching movies or playing games without interruption.
How to Use “Focus Sessions”
If you need serious productivity, Windows 11 includes a dedicated Focus feature. This is essentially a Pomodoro timer integrated directly into your operating system.
- Open the Clock app and select Focus sessions from the left menu (or go to Settings > System > Focus).
- Set how many minutes you want to work for.
- Click Start focus session.
When a Focus session starts, Windows automatically enables Do Not Disturb, prevents app icons on your taskbar from flashing, and puts a small timer on your screen to keep you accountable until your break.
