How to Connect Bluetooth Headphones to a Windows 11 PC

Gone are the days when connecting Bluetooth devices to a PC required downloading sketchy drivers and fighting with conflicting hardware menus. In Windows 11, Microsoft completely overhauled the Bluetooth pairing experience, making it almost as seamless as connecting AirPods to an iPhone.

Whether you are using Sony noise-canceling headphones, Apple AirPods, or a generic headset, here is exactly how to connect Bluetooth headphones to your Windows 11 PC.

Step 1: Put Your Headphones in Pairing Mode

Windows 11 cannot find your headphones if they are not actively broadcasting their presence. This is the most common reason the pairing process fails.

  • Standard Headphones: Usually, you need to press and hold the Power button or a dedicated Bluetooth button for about 5 to 10 seconds until the LED light starts rapidly flashing blue or red.
  • Apple AirPods: Leave both earbuds inside the white charging case, open the lid, and press and hold the small circular button on the back of the case until the light on the front flashes white.

Step 2: Turn on Bluetooth in Windows 11

Before you can pair the device, you must ensure your computer’s Bluetooth radio is actually turned on.

  1. Look at the bottom right corner of your taskbar, near the clock. Click the cluster of icons containing the Wi-Fi, volume, and battery symbols.
  2. The Quick Settings panel will fly up from the bottom.
  3. Look for the Bluetooth icon. If the button is greyed out, click it once to turn it on (it will turn blue).

Step 3: Pair the Headphones

Now that both devices are ready, you can initiate the pairing sequence.

  1. On that same Quick Settings panel, right-click the blue Bluetooth icon and select Go to Settings. (Alternatively, you can open the main Settings app and click Bluetooth & devices in the left sidebar).
  2. At the top of the screen, click the large button labeled Add device.
  3. A black pop-up window will appear asking what kind of device you want to add. Click the first option: Bluetooth (Audio, mice, keyboards, phones, pens, controllers).
  4. Windows will begin scanning the room. Within a few seconds, the name of your headphones (e.g., “WH-1000XM4” or “John’s AirPods”) should appear in the list.
  5. Click the name of your headphones.

A few seconds later, Windows will display a “Your device is ready to go!” message, and you will hear a chime in your headphones confirming the connection.

Troubleshooting: Why Isn’t There Any Sound?

If Windows successfully paired the headphones, but the sound is still coming out of your laptop speakers, you need to manually change the audio output destination.

  1. Click the speaker icon in your taskbar (bottom right corner) to open the Quick Settings panel again.
  2. Look at the volume slider. To the right of the slider, you will see a small arrow icon pointing to the right. Click it.
  3. You will see a list of all available audio outputs. Select your Bluetooth headphones from this list.

The audio will instantly switch over, and you are ready to listen.
