If your iPhone is suddenly running slowly, freezing on random apps, or displaying an ominously low “Storage Full” warning, the culprit is often a bloated cache. As you browse the internet and use various applications, your phone constantly saves tiny files (images, scripts, and temporary data) so it can load those services faster the next time you use them.
Over months or years, these “temporary” files can accumulate into several gigabytes of wasted storage space. Unlike Android, Apple’s iOS does not have a single “Clear All Cache” button. Instead, you must clear the cache in two specific areas: the Safari web browser and third-party apps.
Step 1: Clear the Safari Web Browser Cache
For most users, the Safari web browser holds the vast majority of cached data. Clearing it will instantly free up storage space and fix websites that are failing to load properly.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main settings list until you find Safari (it will have the blue compass icon). Tap it.
- Scroll all the way down this menu until you see a blue link that says Clear History and Website Data. Tap it.
- A confirmation menu will slide up from the bottom of the screen. You can choose to clear data from the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or All history.
- If you want to maximize your storage space, select All history.
- Tap the red Clear History button.
Warning: This action will delete your browsing history and log you out of any websites you are currently signed into. However, it will not delete your saved passwords or your bookmarks.
Step 2: Clear Third-Party App Caches (“Offloading”)
Applications like Instagram, TikTok, and Spotify are notorious for hoarding cached data. Unfortunately, Apple does not allow you to easily wipe the cache for these individual apps without deleting the app itself. However, iOS has a brilliant feature called “Offloading” that solves this problem.
Offloading an app deletes the core application files (and its bloated cache) while permanently saving your personal data, documents, and login credentials. When you reinstall the app, you will not even have to log back in.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on General.
- Tap on iPhone Storage.
- Wait a few seconds for iOS to calculate your storage. You will see a list of every app on your phone, sorted by how much space they consume.
- Find an app that is taking up an unusually large amount of space (e.g., a social media app taking up 3GB) and tap it.
- Look at the breakdown. You will see “App Size” and “Documents & Data”. If the App Size is small but the Documents & Data is massive, that app has a bloated cache.
- Tap the blue Offload App button.
- Confirm by tapping Offload App again on the pop-up menu.
- The app is now removed, but its icon will remain on your home screen with a small cloud symbol next to it.
- Simply tap the app icon on your home screen to instantly redownload it from the App Store. The bloated cache will be gone, but all your personal data will remain perfectly intact.
By regularly clearing Safari and offloading your most heavily used apps, you can keep your iPhone running smoothly and prevent storage warnings.
