If you are switching to a new computer, migrating to a dedicated password manager, or simply want a backup of your credentials, exporting your saved passwords from Google Chrome is a highly practical step. Chrome allows you to export all your saved login details into a single CSV (Comma Separated Values) file.
Exporting Passwords on Desktop
To safely export your credentials from the desktop version of Chrome, follow these instructions:
- Open Google Chrome on your PC or Mac.
- Click the three-dot menu icon located in the top-right corner of the browser window.
- Select Passwords and autofill, and then click on Google Password Manager.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Settings.
- Scroll down to the Export passwords section and click the Download file button.
- Your operating system will prompt you to enter your computer’s administrator password or PIN for security verification.
- Choose a secure location on your computer to save the
Chrome Passwords.csvfile.
Security Warning
The exported CSV file contains all your usernames, website URLs, and passwords in plain text. This means anyone who gains access to this file can read your login credentials without any encryption. Ensure that you delete the CSV file immediately after importing it into your new password manager, and never store it unencrypted on a shared device or cloud storage platform.
