How to Access Advanced Startup Options in Windows 11

If your Windows 11 PC is failing to boot correctly, crashing frequently, or experiencing severe driver issues, you may need to access the Advanced Startup Options menu. This hidden recovery environment, also known as Windows RE (Recovery Environment), allows you to boot into Safe Mode, run Startup Repair, uninstall recent updates, or use the Command Prompt to fix system files.

Method 1: Using the Settings App

If your computer can still boot into the Windows desktop, this is the easiest method.

  • Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
  • Navigate to System > Recovery.
  • Under the “Recovery options” section, find the Advanced startup option.
  • Click the Restart now button next to it. Your PC will immediately restart and load the blue Advanced Startup menu.

Method 2: The Shift + Restart Shortcut

You can also access the recovery environment directly from the Start menu or the lock screen.

  • Click the Start button, then click the Power icon.
  • Press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard.
  • While holding the Shift key, click Restart. Keep holding Shift until the blue “Choose an option” screen appears.

Method 3: Force Restart (For Unbootable PCs)

If Windows is completely broken and cannot reach the login screen, you can force the recovery environment to load by interrupting the boot process.

  • Turn on your PC. As soon as you see the Windows logo or the manufacturer’s logo, press and hold the physical power button for 10 seconds to force it to shut down.
  • Turn the PC on again, and immediately force it to shut down a second time.
  • Turn it on a third time. Windows will detect the failed boot attempts and display the “Preparing Automatic Repair” screen, which will eventually lead you to the Advanced Startup Options menu.
