Typing out a complex Wi-Fi password on a smartphone keyboard is tedious and prone to errors. If your Mac is already connected to your home or office Wi-Fi network and a friend or colleague needs to connect their iPhone, you do not need to hunt down the router or dictate a long string of random characters.
Apple has built a seamless password-sharing feature into its ecosystem, allowing you to instantly beam a Wi-Fi password from your Mac directly to an iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth.
Requirements for Wi-Fi Sharing
For the password sharing prompt to appear on your Mac, both devices must meet several strict security requirements:
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be turned on for both the Mac and the iPhone.
- Proximity: The two devices must be physically close to each other (within normal Bluetooth range).
- Apple ID Contacts: Your Mac’s Apple ID email address must be saved in the iPhone’s Contacts app, and the iPhone’s Apple ID email address must be saved in your Mac’s Contacts app. (This prevents random strangers in coffee shops from constantly requesting your password).
- Unlocked Devices: Both the Mac and the iPhone must be unlocked.
How to Share the Wi-Fi Password
Once you have confirmed that both devices meet the requirements above, the actual sharing process is incredibly simple:
- Ensure your Mac is connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to share.
- Ask the person with the iPhone to open the Settings app and tap on Wi-Fi.
- Tell them to tap on the name of the network your Mac is connected to. The iPhone will display a standard password entry screen.
- Keep the iPhone on this password screen and bring it close to your Mac.
- Within a few seconds, a notification card will slide onto your Mac’s screen saying: “Do you want to share the Wi-Fi password for [Network Name] with [Contact Name]?”
- Click the Share button on your Mac.
- The password field on the iPhone will automatically populate with the correct password, and the device will connect to the network immediately.
- Click Done on your Mac to dismiss the notification.
Troubleshooting: Why Isn’t the Prompt Appearing?
If you bring the iPhone close to the Mac but the sharing notification never appears, try the following fixes:
- Verify Contacts: The most common reason this fails is that the Apple ID email addresses are not saved in each other’s contact cards. Verify this in the Contacts app on both devices.
- Restart Wi-Fi: Turn Wi-Fi off and back on again on the iPhone.
- Forget Network: If the iPhone previously attempted to connect to the network with an incorrect password, tap the blue “i” icon next to the network and select “Forget This Network”, then try again.
