How to Identify and Remove Large Files Taking Up Space in Windows 11

If your Windows 11 PC is running low on storage space, system performance can degrade significantly, preventing you from installing updates or saving new files. While running the standard Disk Cleanup tool is helpful, the fastest way to reclaim massive amounts of space is to locate and remove individual, forgotten large files—such as old video exports, uncompressed archives, or abandoned virtual machine images.

In this guide, we will show you two effective methods for identifying and safely removing the largest files on your Windows 11 hard drive without needing to install any third-party software.

Method 1: Using the Built-In Storage Settings

Windows 11 includes a robust, built-in storage management dashboard that automatically scans your drives and categorises large files for easy deletion.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Settings from the power user menu.
  2. Navigate to System in the left-hand sidebar, then click on Storage in the right pane.
  3. Allow Windows a moment to scan your primary drive. Once complete, you will see a breakdown of what is consuming your space.
  4. Look beneath the main storage bar and click on Temporary files or Other to see specific categories, but for direct large file management, click on Cleanup recommendations.
  5. Expand the Large or unused files section. Windows will present a list of files that are exceptionally large or haven’t been opened recently.
  6. Check the box next to any file you are certain you no longer need, then click the Clean up button at the bottom to delete them permanently.

Method 2: Finding Large Files Using File Explorer

If you prefer a more granular approach, or if you want to search a specific external hard drive, the Windows 11 File Explorer search function includes powerful hidden filters for finding large files.

  1. Open File Explorer (press Windows Key + E).
  2. In the left navigation pane, select This PC to search your entire computer, or click on a specific drive (like C: or D:) to limit the search scope.
  3. Click into the Search box located in the top-right corner of the window.
  4. Type the following command exactly as written and press Enter:
    size:>1GB
  5. File Explorer will now scan the drive and display every single file larger than 1 Gigabyte.

You can adjust the search filter to suit your needs. For example, typing size:>500MB will find files larger than 500 Megabytes, while size:gigantic is a built-in shortcut that finds files larger than 128MB.

Once the search completes, you can sort the results by clicking the Size column header. To delete a file, simply right-click it and select the Trash can icon (Delete). Remember to empty your Recycle Bin afterwards to permanently reclaim the disk space.

Important Warning Before Deleting Files

When searching for large files manually using File Explorer, you may occasionally uncover massive system files such as pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys, or swapfile.sys. Do not delete these files. They are critical operating system components required for Windows 11 memory management and sleep functions. Deleting them can cause system instability or immediate crashes.

As a general rule, only delete large files from your personal user folders (like Downloads, Videos, and Documents). If you do not recognise a file located within the C:\Windows or C:\Program Files directories, leave it alone.
