How to Clear the Cache in Google Chrome on an Android Phone

Speeding Up Your Mobile Browsing

As you use Google Chrome on your Android phone to read news, watch videos, and shop online, the browser constantly downloads small pieces of data—like images, logos, and website code. It stores these files locally on your phone’s internal storage in a hidden folder called the “cache.”

The cache is designed to make your browsing experience faster. If you visit a website today, Chrome saves its logo in the cache. When you visit that same website tomorrow, Chrome does not need to waste your cellular data downloading the logo again; it simply loads the copy it already saved. This speeds up page load times significantly.

However, over several months, this cache can grow to several gigabytes in size, consuming valuable storage space on your phone. Furthermore, if a website updates its design but Chrome insists on loading an old, cached file, the webpage may look broken or refuse to function correctly. When Chrome starts feeling sluggish or websites fail to load properly, clearing the cache is the fastest and most effective troubleshooting step.

How to Clear the Chrome Cache on Android

Clearing the cache in Chrome is completely safe. It will not delete your saved passwords, your browsing history, or your bookmarks (unless you specifically tell it to). It only deletes the temporary files.

  1. Open the Google Chrome app on your Android phone.
  2. Look in the extreme top right corner of the screen and tap the three vertical dots (the menu button).
  3. From the drop-down menu, tap on Settings.
  4. Scroll down the Settings menu until you find the “Basics” section, and tap on Privacy and security.
  5. Tap the very first option at the top of the screen: Clear browsing data.

You will now see a screen with two tabs at the top: “Basic” and “Advanced.” The “Basic” tab is perfect for this task.

  1. Look at the Time range drop-down menu at the top right. By default, it might say “Last 15 minutes.” Tap it and select All time to ensure you perform a complete cleanup.
  2. You will see three checkboxes. To fix website loading errors without losing your login sessions, ensure the boxes are checked exactly like this:
    • Browsing history: Unchecked (Keep this empty so you do not lose the record of sites you visited).
    • Cookies and site data: Unchecked (Keep this empty so you do not get logged out of all your accounts).
    • Cached images and files: Checked (This is the box that actually clears the cache).
  3. Once you have verified that only “Cached images and files” is ticked, tap the blue Clear data button at the very bottom right of the screen.

Chrome will briefly display a “Clearing browsing data” message. Once it disappears, the process is complete. You can now close the settings menu and return to browsing.

What Happens Next?

Immediately after clearing the cache, you might notice two minor changes.

First, the very next time you visit your favourite websites, they might take one or two seconds longer to load than usual. This is normal; Chrome is simply downloading fresh, up-to-date copies of the website’s files to rebuild the cache.

Second, if you go to your phone’s main settings and check your available storage space, you should notice that you have successfully reclaimed a significant amount of free space—often a gigabyte or more if you have not performed this maintenance in a long time.
