How to Add a Bookmark in Mozilla Firefox

Saving Your Favourite Websites for Later

The internet is unimaginably vast, and attempting to rely purely on your memory (or your browser’s history tab) to find a specific website again is a recipe for frustration. If you use Mozilla Firefox for your daily browsing, saving your favourite news sites, webmail login pages, and online banking portals is essential for a smooth, fast internet experience.

In Firefox, saved web pages are called Bookmarks. When you bookmark a page, Firefox permanently saves the exact URL address and allows you to organise it into folders, making it incredibly easy to jump directly to your favourite sites with a single click, rather than typing the address out manually every time.

Method 1: Using the Star Icon (The Fastest Way)

The quickest and most common way to save a page you are currently looking at is by using the visual icon built directly into the Firefox interface.

  1. Open Firefox and navigate to the exact webpage you want to save.
  2. Look at the very end of the main address bar (the long white box where you type website names).
  3. You will see a small outline of a Star icon. Click it.
  4. The star will immediately turn solid blue, indicating the page has been successfully saved.

A small pop-up box will appear asking you to confirm the details. You can change the “Name” (e.g., from a long, messy title to simply “My Bank”) and choose exactly which folder the bookmark should live in. By default, Firefox saves new bookmarks into a folder called “Other Bookmarks.” Click Save when you are finished.

Method 2: Using the Keyboard Shortcut

If you find yourself researching a topic and needing to rapidly save dozens of different pages without constantly moving your mouse up to the toolbar, you can use a keyboard shortcut.

  1. Navigate to the webpage you wish to bookmark.
  2. On a Windows PC or Linux machine, hold down the Ctrl key and press D.
  3. On a Mac, hold down the Command (Cmd) key and press D.

The exact same pop-up box will appear, allowing you to name the bookmark and assign it to a folder. Simply hit Enter to confirm it.

How to Show the Bookmarks Toolbar

Saving bookmarks is only half the battle; you also need to be able to access them quickly. By default, Firefox hides your bookmarks inside a menu to keep the browser looking clean. However, the most efficient way to browse is to turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar—a dedicated horizontal strip sitting just beneath the address bar that displays your most important links as clickable buttons.

  1. Right-click anywhere in the empty grey space at the very top of the Firefox window (next to your open tabs).
  2. Hover your mouse over the option labelled Bookmarks Toolbar.
  3. Select Always Show.

A new, blank horizontal bar will appear under the address bar.

How to Organise Your Bookmarks on the Toolbar

Now that the toolbar is visible, you can easily customise it for maximum efficiency.

  1. Navigate to a website you visit every day (like your email provider).
  2. Click the Star icon in the address bar to save it.
  3. In the pop-up menu that appears, click the dropdown box labelled Location (or Folder).
  4. Change it from “Other Bookmarks” to Bookmarks Toolbar.
  5. Click Save.

The link will instantly appear as a convenient button directly on your new toolbar. You can repeat this process for your top five or six daily websites. If the order looks wrong, you can simply click and drag the icons horizontally along the toolbar to rearrange them exactly how you like them.
