How to Check Your Graphics Card (GPU) Temperature in Windows 11

Whether you are a competitive gamer striving for maximum framerates, a video editor rendering 4K footage, or an AI developer training complex models, your Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is doing the heaviest lifting in your computer. Because the GPU works so hard, it generates a massive amount of heat.

If your graphics card gets too hot, it will automatically slow itself down to prevent physical damage—a process known as “thermal throttling.” This results in stuttering gameplay, dropped frames, and system crashes. Knowing how to monitor your GPU temperature is essential for diagnosing performance issues and ensuring your PC case has adequate airflow.

In the past, users had to download clunky third-party monitoring software to see this data. Fortunately, Microsoft has finally integrated GPU temperature monitoring natively into Windows 11.

In this guide, we will show you how to quickly check your GPU temperature without installing any extra software, and explain what temperatures are considered safe.

How to Check GPU Temperature in the Task Manager

The Windows 11 Task Manager is a powerful diagnostic tool that now provides a real-time readout of your graphics card thermals.

  1. Right-click on the Start button (the Windows logo) on your taskbar.
  2. Select Task Manager from the context menu. (Alternatively, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard).
  3. If the Task Manager opens in a small, simplified view, click More details at the bottom of the window.
  4. Click on the Performance tab on the left-hand sidebar (represented by an icon that looks like a heartbeat monitor).
  5. Scroll down the left-hand menu and locate your GPU (e.g., GPU 0 – NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080).
  6. Click on the GPU name.
  7. Look at the main data panel on the right side of the screen. Near the bottom, beneath the usage graphs, you will see a dedicated line for GPU Temperature, displayed in degrees Celsius (e.g., 65°C).

Note: If you are using a laptop with two graphics cards (integrated graphics and a dedicated NVIDIA/AMD chip), ensure you select the dedicated GPU from the left-hand list, as the integrated graphics chip rarely has a dedicated temperature sensor displayed here.

What Is a Safe GPU Temperature?

Now that you know how to find the temperature, you need to know how to interpret the data. Safe operating temperatures vary slightly between manufacturers, but you can generally follow these guidelines:

  • 30°C to 45°C (Idle): This is normal when you are just browsing the web, watching YouTube, or staring at your desktop.
  • 65°C to 80°C (Under Load): This is the ideal, safe operating range when you are actively playing a demanding video game or rendering video. The fans will likely be spinning audibly to maintain this temperature.
  • 80°C to 85°C (Running Hot): This is safe, but it indicates your GPU is working very hard. If it stays here constantly, you should consider cleaning the dust out of your PC case.
  • 90°C and Above (Danger Zone): At this temperature, modern GPUs will actively throttle their speed to prevent a fire or hardware failure. If you hit 90°C, your games will stutter heavily. You must immediately improve the airflow in your PC or clean the GPU fans.

Why Is My GPU Temperature Missing?

If you follow the steps above and cannot see the GPU Temperature line in Task Manager, it is almost always due to an outdated graphics driver. Windows relies on the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver software to report the thermal data to the operating system.

To fix this, open the NVIDIA GeForce Experience app (or AMD Software Adrenalin Edition) and download the latest “Game Ready” drivers. Once installed, restart your computer, and the temperature data should immediately appear in the Task Manager.
