How to Convert a Microsoft Word Document to a Google Doc

Microsoft Word is the undisputed industry standard for word processing, meaning you will inevitably receive .docx files from colleagues, clients, or professors. However, if you prefer the real-time collaboration features of Google Docs, or if you simply do not want to pay for a Microsoft Office 365 subscription, you might wonder how to open and edit these files.

Fortunately, Google Drive provides an incredibly robust conversion engine. You can choose to simply view and edit the Word document in its original format using Google’s interface, or you can permanently convert it into a native Google Doc for better compatibility. Here is everything you need to know about both methods.

Method 1: Permanently Convert a Word File to a Google Doc

If you plan to collaborate with others, leave comments, or use advanced Google Docs features (like voice typing or add-ons), you should permanently convert the file. This creates a duplicate copy of the document in Google’s native format, leaving your original .docx file untouched.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to Google Drive (drive.google.com).
  2. Click the large + New button in the top-left corner and select File upload.
  3. Locate the Microsoft Word document on your computer and click Open to upload it.
  4. Once uploaded, double-click the file in Google Drive. It will open in a preview window.
  5. At the very top of the screen, click the button that says Open with Google Docs.
  6. The file will open in a new tab. You are now in “Office Editing Mode” (you will see a blue .DOCX badge next to the filename).
  7. To finalise the conversion, click File in the top menu, then select Save as Google Docs.

Google Docs will open yet another tab containing your freshly converted file. If you check your Google Drive, you will now see two versions of the document: the original Word file (indicated by a blue ‘W’ icon) and the new Google Doc (indicated by a blue document icon with white lines).

Method 2: Automatically Convert All Future Uploads

If you regularly receive Word documents and always want them converted, performing the manual steps above becomes tedious. You can configure Google Drive to automatically convert every Office file you upload.

  1. Go to the main Google Drive dashboard.
  2. Click the Gear icon (Settings) in the top-right corner, then click Settings.
  3. Under the “General” tab, look for the Convert uploads section.
  4. Check the box next to Convert uploaded files to Google Docs editor format.
  5. Click Done.

From now on, whenever you drag and drop a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file into Google Drive, it will automatically be transformed into a Doc, Sheet, or Slide, respectively.

What Happens to Formatting During Conversion?

Google has spent years perfecting its conversion algorithms, and for most standard text documents, the transition is flawless. Headings, bold text, bullet points, and basic tables will transfer perfectly.

However, you should anticipate formatting issues if the original Word document relies heavily on Microsoft-specific features. Complex page borders, highly customised SmartArt graphics, embedded macros, and specific proprietary fonts (like Calibri or Cambria, which Google must substitute with similar web fonts) may shift or break during the conversion.

If precise formatting is critical (for example, if you are submitting a highly styled resume), it is highly recommended to use Method 1. This allows you to edit the Google Doc copy, and then export it back out as a Word file or PDF when you are finished, ensuring the final recipient sees exactly what you intended.
