How to Create a Virtual Machine in Windows 11 Using Hyper-V

Testing unverified software, experimenting with beta operating systems, or running legacy corporate applications on your primary computer is a significant security risk. A single malicious file or corrupted installation can severely damage your personal files and cripple your operating system. Rather than risking your primary environment, the safest approach is to create a Windows 11 Hyper-V virtual machine.

A virtual machine (VM) acts as a completely isolated, secondary computer running securely within a window on your desktop. While third-party tools like VirtualBox and VMware are highly popular, Microsoft includes an incredibly powerful, native virtualisation hypervisor directly within Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions called Hyper-V.

Requirements for Using Hyper-V on Windows 11

Before you begin the setup process, you must ensure your computer meets Microsoft’s strict hardware requirements for virtualisation.

  • Windows 11 Edition: You must be running Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education. Hyper-V is completely disabled in Windows 11 Home.
  • Hardware Virtualisation: Your computer’s processor must support hardware virtualisation (Intel VT-x or AMD-V), and this feature must be enabled within your motherboard’s BIOS or UEFI settings.
  • Memory: You need a minimum of 4GB of RAM, though 8GB or higher is strongly recommended to ensure both the host and the virtual machine perform smoothly.

How to Enable Hyper-V in Windows 11

Because Hyper-V is considered an advanced administrative tool, it is not enabled by default. You must manually install the feature through the Windows interface.

  1. Click the Start button, type Windows Features, and press Enter to open the Turn Windows features on or off dialogue box.
  2. Scroll down the list and locate the folder named Hyper-V.
  3. Check the box next to Hyper-V. Ensure that both the Hyper-V Management Tools and Hyper-V Platform sub-folders are also checked.
  4. Click OK. Windows will now search for the required files and apply the changes.
  5. When prompted, click Restart now to reboot your computer and finalise the installation.

How to Create a Virtual Switch for Network Connectivity

For your new virtual machine to access the internet to download updates or browse the web, it needs a virtual network adapter. Setting this up before creating the virtual machine prevents annoying network configuration errors later.

  1. Click the Start button, type Hyper-V Manager, and press Enter to open the application.
  2. In the left pane, click on your computer’s name to select your local server.
  3. In the right-hand Actions pane, click on Virtual Switch Manager.
  4. Under Create virtual switch, select External to allow the VM to share your host computer’s active network connection.
  5. Click Create Virtual Switch.
  6. Give the switch a recognisable name (such as “External Switch”) and ensure your primary network adapter (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) is selected from the drop-down menu.
  7. Click Apply and then OK. You may experience a brief interruption in your network connection as the switch is configured.

How to Create a Virtual Machine Using Hyper-V

With the network configured, you can now build the actual virtual machine environment.

  1. In the Hyper-V Manager, look at the right-hand Actions pane, click New, and select Virtual Machine.
  2. The New Virtual Machine Wizard will appear. Click Next to begin.
  3. Specify Name and Location: Enter a descriptive name for your virtual machine (e.g., “Windows 10 Sandbox” or “Ubuntu Testing”). Click Next.
  4. Specify Generation: Select Generation 2. This modern standard provides UEFI support, Secure Boot, and significantly better overall performance for newer operating systems. Click Next.
  5. Assign Memory: Allocate RAM for your VM. Enter at least 4096 MB (4GB) if you are installing a modern OS. Leave the Use Dynamic Memory box checked to allow Hyper-V to manage RAM usage efficiently. Click Next.
  6. Configure Networking: Click the drop-down menu and select the External Switch you created earlier. Click Next.
  7. Connect Virtual Hard Disk: Specify the size of your virtual hard drive. 40GB to 60GB is generally sufficient for basic testing. Click Next.
  8. Installation Options: Select Install an operating system from a bootable image file. Click Browse and locate the ISO file (e.g., a Windows 11 or Ubuntu ISO) you downloaded previously. Click Next.
  9. Review your configured settings and click Finish. Hyper-V will now allocate the resources and generate the virtual machine.

Booting and Installing the Operating System

Your virtual machine is now built, but it is currently powered off. You need to start it and proceed with the standard installation process.

  1. In the Hyper-V Manager list, double-click your newly created virtual machine. A dark window representing the VM’s monitor will open.
  2. Click the green Start button located in the middle of the screen or on the top toolbar.
  3. The virtual machine will boot from the ISO file you attached earlier. If you see a prompt that says “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD”, immediately click inside the VM window and press a key on your keyboard.
  4. Follow the standard on-screen instructions to install the operating system, just as you would on a physical computer.

Optimising Virtual Machine Performance

Once your operating system is installed and running, you might notice that it feels slightly sluggish compared to your host machine. By default, Hyper-V limits virtual machines to a single processor core to preserve host stability.

To improve speed and responsiveness, shut down the virtual machine completely. In the Hyper-V Manager, right-click your VM and select Settings. Navigate to the Processor tab and increase the number of virtual processors to 2 or 4, depending on your physical CPU capabilities. This simple adjustment will dramatically enhance the fluidity of your virtualised environment.
